Movie Review: There Will Be Blood

April 7th, 2008 No comments

twbb.jpgThere Will Be Blood is a thinking man’s movie. It can be described as powerful, poetic, and dramatic. It has won a bunch of awards across the world. Movie goers have rewarded the movie with a 8.5 rating on IMDb and a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Then why did I find it so lackluster?

The movie started off slow. The first ten minutes or so of the movie had no dialogue. I found that boring and confusing. The only thing I got out of the beginning was that this movie is about oil. If they wanted to show the viewer oil, there are plenty of other ways of doing it that does not take up ten minutes.

Movie Review: Stardust

April 4th, 2008 No comments

stardust.jpgStardust is a surprisingly good movie. I don’t remember seeing anything about this movie in 2007, so I watched it not knowing what to expect. Turns out, that made for a better viewing experience.

This movie is a medieval fantasy tale about a fallen star and the ensuing chase to obtain the powers to be had from the star. The movie includes all the classic fantasy elements, such as magic spells, evil witch sisters, royal siblings assassinating each other to be the next king, and a metro sky captain of an airship.

Movie Review: Family Guy Blue Harvest

March 1st, 2008 No comments

Blue HarvestFamily Guy meets Star Wars. This movie is hilarious! Take the wacky yet brilliant humor of Family Guy and apply it to Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope. The result is one damn entertaining movie.

The only gripe I had with the movie was its length. It is about 45 minutes long. This “movie” is actually the season 6 opener, aired on TV in September, 2007. The 45 minute length is the amount of content shown during a regular hour of broadcast television, with commercials filling up the rest of the time. It would have been great if this movie was feature length, say 80 minutes or so.

Movie Review: Sweeney Todd

February 9th, 2008 No comments

sweeney_todd_cover.jpgSweeney Todd is one weird ass movie. I’m always for innovation and breaking status quo, so I appreciate director Tim Burton’s efforts. The movie tries new and unique things. Sweeney Todd is a dramatic horror thriller about a demented barber attempting to enact revenge on a corrupt judge in London. And the movie is a musical. Read more…

Movie Review: American Gangster

February 5th, 2008 No comments

american_gangster_movie_cover.jpgAmerican Gangster is a great movie. The story is excellent and very well paced. I usually complain about long movies, but not this one. Coming in at a whooping 157 minutes, its over two and a half hours long, but the movie puts every bit of that to good use.

American Gangster is a movie based on the life of Frank Lucas, a drug lord in Harlem, New York during the 1960s and 1970s. Frank, played by Denzel Washington, worked as a driver for Bumpy Johnson, a drug dealer in New York. After Bumpy dies, Frank takes over. Slowly but surely, Frank Lucas owns Harlem. Read more…

Movie Review: The Golden Compass

February 2nd, 2008 No comments

golden_compass_movie.jpgThe Coca Cola bear has a movie! The Golden Compass is the first of a trilogy based on the books by Philip Pullman. Boring. This movie is too long at almost two hours. The story is slow to develop and slow to action. I take that back; there is no action. The battle near the end of the movie is uninspiring. Part of that is undoubtedly the trilogy factor coming into play. They have to stretch the story enough to fill up three films. So far, the first film is boring. If the second film doesn’t pick it up, no one will care about the third. Read more…

Movie Review: The Comebacks

January 28th, 2008 No comments

comebacks_movie_cover.jpgThe Comebacks is a very simple movie, requiring no deep thought. When viewed with low expectations, the movie entertains. The Comebacks is chocked full of sports movie spoofs and satire from movies such as Invincible, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and The Longest Yard.

Most of the jokes here are based on slapstick violence, stereotypes, and sexual innuendos. The story follows Coach Lambeau Fields as he attempts to revitalize his coaching career, in middle of nowhere Heartland State University in Texas.

Movie Review: Hitman

January 26th, 2008 No comments

HitmanAgent 47 is the one of the latest to make the jump from video games to movie screen. The nameless killer is an assassin for hire in a group known as The Organization–known as The Agency in the video game.

When a hit on a Russian political member turns bad, Agent 47 finds himself being chased by Interpol, the Russian FSB, and even other hitmen from The Organization.
